Semiconductor Wafer, Electronic Device and Consumer
Electronic Manufacturing Systems and Test Process Automation
Equipment: We have been providing semiconductor
automation systems for niche processes since our inception in
1996. We develop/manufacture robotic equipment
according to specific customer needs. We offer several
"off-the-shelf" semiconductor automation products such as the WAFERFLEXtm
semiconductor wafer processing systems, ATLAStm
(US Pat # 6,218,853) environmentally controlled, robotic test handlers and
the DStm
(US Pat # 5,954,205 & 5,704,489) small bench top test handlers.
Our systems are
designed to handle various types of semi / electronic products
from bare silicon wafers, bare dies, packaged semiconductor
chips, populated circuit boards and plug-in memory cards to final
consumer electronic devices such as cell phones.
Systems include robotic assembly systems, custom automation and
specialized machinery development, wafer transfer equipment, wafer packaging, wafer
vision inspection for surface defects, wafer marking (bad dies),
robotic pick-and-place test handlers, gravity fed test handlers, thermally
capable test handlers, micro-assembly/nano-positioning
systems and equipment.

and Brochure
The WaferFlex system is capable of
performing a wide range of tasks within a given work cell.
The custom configuration show above was developed for one
specific customer. This WaferFlex version used a non-contact Bernoulli End Effecter to pickup ultra thin wafers
from a cassette, transfer wafers to a vision inspection stage,
inspect the wafers for surface defects, mark bad dies with ink,
cure the ink with UV light, then transfer the wafers to a packing
station and pack the wafers for shipment.
Custom,
Robotic Semiconductor Wafer Handling and Equipment Development
We develop custom, robotic semiconductor wafer handling
and wafer transfer systems to meet each new customer's unique
specifications as described below. (Note: For
information on our standard wafer handling platform and for
ultra-thin wafer processing, also see the WaferFlextm
description provided above).
Semiconductor Wafer Handling Systems:
SSI develops custom systems for wafer handling, wafer
inspection, wafer packaging, marking, etc.

Robotic
Wafer Handling Subsystems:
We integrate a
wide variety of subsystems including: Semiconductor
wafer handling robotic arms (6-axis and scara wafer handling
robots / class 1, class 10 and class 100 cleanroom pick and place
robot arms), wafer grippers (standard wafer edge grippers, vacuum and
non-contact Bernoulli Effect tools and custom designed wafer
grippers), cassette loaders, bare reticle stockers, reticle
carriers, lithography bays,
prototypes, special machinery, custom
and standard semiconductor automation equipment / machines and
various robotic front-end and back-end semiconductor capitol
equipment systems integration.
Wafer
Handling and Carrier Handling Operations: Our
robot-based systems perform various operations such as transferring
wafers between cassettes, carriers and magazines. Systems
perform robotic wafer cassette, wafer carrier, wafer magazine and
smif pod handling, transferring, transporting, sorting,
filling, loading / unloading, binning and storing.
Wafer
Vision Inspection and Marking:
Systems perform wafer inspection to detect scratches, bad
dies and other defects. Systems
may identify visual defects, record bad die locations, perform
mapping, mark bad dies using inkjet, dye or laser
marking equipment, perform wafer identification and wafer
tracking.
Packaging: Systems perform
automatic wafer packaging involving inserts, packing materials and
automated placement into wafer transport and wafer shipping
containers.
Wet Bench Automation and Diffusion
Furnace Automation: In select
cases, we perform wet bench retrofitting, refurbishing and upgrading,
wet bench and diffusion furnace automation and wet process
equipment integration and semiconductor manufacturing process
equipment system integration.
Wafer Types: Various types of
wafers are handled including thin and ultra-thin wafers,
photovoltaic solar cells (photocells), silicon (si) wafers, gallium
arsenide (GaAs) wafers and other wafer materials, 150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm
wafers, hard disks (disk drive and disk drive components).
| SSI Robotics has an installed base
of over 300 test handlers in use throughout North America, Europe and
Asia. We develop unique, application-specific test handlers that
vary for each customer. The following section covers some of our
test handling products and capabilities.

"The SSI (Test)
Handlers have been performing well in a 24 hour 7 day operation. They
help us achieve the high throughput requirement in our operation"
|

- SSI Robotics offers a variety of flexible test handlers
for use on circuit boards, plug-in cards, photonic packages, integrated circuits
and other products. Our ATLAStm Robotic Handler (US Pat # 6,218,853) is highly
flexible and adaptable, allowing application specific systems to be implemented
quickly. We have interfaced with many test equipment providers such as Agilent
(formerly Hewlett Packard) and Advantest. Our systems often include thermally
controlled environments. We have robotic test handlers running 24/7 in North
America, Europe and Asia.
